Lord’s Wines, McGregor: A Wine Farm You Don’t Rush
There are wine farms you visit… and then there are wine farms you feel! Lord’s Wines, tucked into the mountains above McGregor, falls very firmly into the second category. You don’t simply just tick off this place, instead it asks you to slow down and then rewards you when you do.
McGregor: A Town That Moves at Its Own Pace
McGregor has a way of announcing itself quietly. You arrive and immediately feel it. In this town the word “rush” simply does not exist!
Dusty roads lead past old houses with deep verandas and wide porches, the kind built for lingering. English style wild gardens spill over fences, bougainvillea climbs wherever it pleases, and coral trees line the streets, adding unexpected bursts of colour against the soft, time-worn landscape.

McGregor is a town where life happens over the wall; where conversations drift, neighbours greet each other slowly, and nothing feels urgent. There’s an old world charm here, a sense of continuity, as if the town has gently resisted the modern urge to hurry.
The Road to Lord’s Wines: A Slow Climb Into the Mountains
The road to Lord’s Wines begins as a long gravel stretch, weaving its way toward the Riviersonderend Mountains. Farmland rolls past on either side. There’s no traffic, no noise… just land, sky, and distance.
It carries a quiet nostalgia, hinting at a time long before engines and deadlines. It’s easy to imagine donkey carts on these roads, or women in long white lace dresses walking shaded paths in the late 1800s, when days unfolded slowly and evenings were unhurried.

As you climb higher, the air cools. The views stretch wider. And somewhere along the way without you noticing your shoulders drop.
And that my friends is generally a very good sign.
Wine Tasting at Lord’s Wines: Knowledge, Laughter, and the Details That Matter

The moment you walk in, it feels like greeting old friends. It’s not just about the wine in your glass, but about why it tastes the way it does. They have that rare, beautiful balance: deeply knowledgeable, effortlessly warm, and completely at ease.

It is the kind of people who make you laugh, share stories, and guide you through terroir, altitude, soil types, and winemaking choices without ever being intimidating or rehearsed.
By the end of the tasting, you’re not only a little wiser about wine, but also smiling, lighter in spirit, and genuinely glad you came.

Cool-Climate Wines That Reflect the Place
The Pinot Noir feels particularly at home here — which is part of its quiet magic. Far from the coast, deep inland, heading toward the Karoo, you might not expect to find this delicate, cool-climate variety thriving in these mountains. And yet, here it is: elegant, expressive, and grounded, unfolding with subtle layers of fruit, earth, and spice. It doesn’t shout. It doesn’t rush. It simply reveals itself, much like the landscape around it.

The whites: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chenin Blanc are fresh, precise, and beautifully balanced, shaped by altitude and restraint rather than excess.
Staying at Lord’s Wines: The Cap Classique Cottage Experience

Some places ask you to leave too soon. Lord’s Wines gently suggests you stay.
We stayed in the Pinot Noir & Cap Classique Cottages, and it felt like a natural extension of the day — unpretentious, peaceful, and perfectly placed. The two cottages sit next door to each other, separated by a small wall, giving both privacy while still sharing the sense of the property’s calm and charm.
Mornings are cool, misty, and slow.

Afternoons stretch, and a simple but delicious lunch on the terrace at Gezelligheid feels perfectly indulgent. The menu isn’t extensive, but each dish is crafted with care, flavor, and a sense of ease. You sit, looking out over a view that rolls for miles, where undulating hills meet distant mountain silhouettes, and the world seems to slow its pace just for you. The air is soft, the light golden, and every sip, every bite, feels like a quiet celebration of time, place, and the art of simply being.

Evenings arrive without announcement, echoing the stillness of the day as the mountains blush pink.
Sitting under the trees with a glass of wine in hand, watching weaver birds dart between branches, you become aware of just how alive this place is. There’s constant movement… wings, leaves, light but nothing feels busy.

The Cap Classique Cottage, just steps away, is equally charming, but with a slightly different vibe. Light spills through shuttered doors, and a semi-private veranda invites lingering with a morning coffee or an evening sparkling glass.
It’s a space made for reflection, for savoring the landscape, and for watching the sun dip behind the mountains while listening to the distant calls of birds and the gentle rustle of trees.

And then there are the two blue cranes. Quiet, elegant, almost otherworldly, they’ve made Lord’s Wines their home. Seeing them wander through the property feels symbolic somehow… a reminder that this land is respected, shared, and alive in ways that go beyond vines and bottles.
Whether you’re in the Pinot Noir Cottage or the Cap Classique Cottage, the experience is the same: time slows, senses awaken, and you become part of the rhythm of the place.
Birdlife, Stillness, and the Luxury of Doing Nothing
One of the most unexpected luxuries at Lord’s Wines is the stillness. Not silence, but a layered, living quiet filled with birdsong and wind moving through trees.

It’s the kind of environment that gently resets you. You notice small things again. You stop checking the time. You pour another glass without justification. And for a moment, the outside world feels very far away. Exactly where it should be!

Why Lord’s Wines Feels Like a My Boozy Kitchen Kind of Place
Lord’s Wines isn’t about spectacle. It’s about place, people, and patience… three things I return to again and again through My Boozy Kitchen.

It reflects the same philosophy I believe in when it comes to wine and food:
- Take your time.
- Ask questions.
- Enjoy the process.
From the coral tree lined streets of McGregor to the long gravel road winding into the mountains, from laughter in the tasting room to blue cranes at sunset; Lord’s Wines doesn’t rush you. And in a world that constantly asks us to hurry, that feels like a quiet kind of luxury!
If you’re exploring the Robertson Wine Route, planning a weekend in McGregor, or simply searching for a wine farm that feels as good as the wines taste, Lord’s Wines is one of those rare places that stays with you… long after the last glass is empty.
And honestly? Those are the best kinds of places.
