WINE NEWS: Sweet Victory For De Krans In 2020 Winemag Prescient Report
The Prescient Report of the Top 10 Sweet Wines & Fortifieds as convened by Winemag.co.za has been released, with De Krans Wines securing no less than three of these spots. The deserving recipients were the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2016 and 2017 respectively as well as the De Krans Muscat De Frontignan 2019.
The wines submitted were tasted blind (labels out of sight) by a three-person panel, scoring done according to the 100-point quality scale. The judging panel was chaired by Winemag.co.za editor, Christian Eedes, who was joined by industry heavyweights Roland Peens and James Pietersen.
A lush golden yellow colour, the De Krans Muscat De Frontignan 2019 displays typical Muscat flavours on the nose, which are complemented by an abundance of fresh ripe fruits of peach, litchis and spring blossoms. The Muscat flavours carry through to the palate resulting in a syrupy sweet wine with fresh soft fruit flavours.
These fill the palate beautifully as the wine explodes in your mouth. Perfect on its own or serve with desserts, nuts and dried fruit. Available from the farm only at R98 per bottle.
Also included in the Top 10 are the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2016 and 2017 respectively, which winemaker Christoff de Wet describes these as being a dark black in colour with a plum red rim. On the nose the wines are beautifully aromatic with ripe red berry, cherry, violet and dark chocolate flavours.
Your first sip of this award-winning port reminds you of ripe dark fruits such as plums, mulberries and blackcurrants. A well-rounded port with smooth dark chocolate undertones and firm tannins holds the promise of a fortified wine guaranteed to mature for at least 30 years. Savour on its own or enjoy with a selection of well matured cheeses. Both Cape Vintage Reserves are available from most outlets nationwide at R375 per bottle, respectively.
