Escape to Dunstone: Where Romance, Art, and Tranquility Await

Picture this: you’re sipping a glass of Shiraz on a sunny patio, the Hawequa Mountains stretched out in the distance like they’ve been casually brushed onto the horizon. The city noise? Gone! No hooting taxis or blaring music, annoying dogs barking, neighbours arguing. Silence except for the birds “gossiping” in the trees and the bees lazily floating from flower to flower. The kind of quiet that makes you exhale a little deeper and think, “Yes… This is exactly what I need!

Welcome to Dunstone Wine Estate! A family-run wine estate tucked away just an hour outside of Cape Town, where vineyards meet mountain views and every moment feels like it’s straight out of a storybook.

Dunstone Lilly Cottage peeping throught vine leaves

We spent the weekend at Lilly Cottage, a little haven tucked at the edge of the vineyards, where everything slows to the pace of a lazy afternoon and a second glass of wine. The garden grows a little wild in the best kind of way, and there’s this calm here that makes you slow down without even realizing it. Wine glass in hand, feet up, heart full.

Dunstone isn’t just a place to visit. It’s a mood. A memory in the making. And I can’t wait to tell you all about it.

Dunstone Accommodation: Where Romance Meets Rustic Elegance

Your Private Chapter in the Vineyards

Welcome to Dunstone Country Estate! This peaceful vineyard is found in the heart of Wellington’s Bovlei Valley! Ideal for lovers, dreamers, and anyone in search of a little stillness, nostalgia, and that feeling you can’t quite put into words.

DUNSTONE ACCOMMODATION AREA

This working wine and fruit farm isn’t just about a place to stay. It’s about slowing down and soaking it all in. Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, sneaking away for a romantic weekend, or just need a reset, Dunstone offers that rare blend of laid-back charm and thoughtful luxury.

The Guava Cottage: For Hopeless Romantics and Free Spirits

Think two dreamy bedrooms with king-sized beds and soft-as-a-sigh linen. The bathrooms invite you to linger with its deep bathtubs made for long and quiet soaks. Just think bubbles, a book and glass of vine! Outside, your private pool catches the light by day and reflects the stars at night, peaceful until you slip in.

The kitchen is mostly fully equipped which makes it ideal for lazy breakfasts or a cheeky glass of wine while dinner simmers. And the stoep? It opens out over guava orchards and vineyards that stretch toward the mountains, like something out of a painting.

Lilly Cottage (Our Pick): A Secret Between You, the Vines, and the Sky

Lilly Cottage was exactly the kind of place we’d been hoping for—cozy without feeling cramped, stylish without trying too hard. The king-size bed, wrapped in crisp cotton linen and a plush goose-down duvet, promised the kind of deep, indulgent sleep you only get when you’re far from home.

The space had everything we needed: a well-stocked bar fridge, a proper coffee station for slow mornings, and even DStv for when we felt like curling up for a lazy night in. The modern bathroom was a definite bonus: spacious, with a large bathtub, a separate shower, and that all-important detail… excellent water pressure (always a win!).

Step outside, and you’re greeted by beautifully landscaped gardens blooming with roses, lavender, and herbs that perfume the air. And the view? Just WOW!!!

Waking up to those mountain views is something one will never get tired of.

What stood out most was how thoughtfully the space had been converted. Once part of the estate’s old stables, the cottage still carries a whisper of its rustic past while offering every modern comfort. It’s not palatial… and that’s exactly the point. It’s the kind of intimate, well-considered getaway where you feel instantly at ease!

Art in the Vines: Dunstone’s Permanent Art Gallery

Whether you’re curled up on the stoep watching the light shift across the vines or lingering in the garden or just relaxing in the sparkling pool, there’s a feeling here that time is gently stretched, encouraging a stillness, a soft conversation, and quiet reconnection.

But Dunstone doesn’t just speak to the senses—it also stirs the soul. The estate’s art gallery invites you to immerse yourself in a different kind of visual story.

Tucked between the vineyard and the valley, Dunstone Estate is home to a permanent onsite art gallery that’s just as much a part of the experience as the wine, food and views.

The gallery celebrates the creative spirit of South Africa, with carefully curated pieces that reflect the beauty and depth of the land.

The gallery spotlights well-known South African artists, with past exhibits featuring internationally acclaimed sculptor Charles Gotthard. Other local talents have included the likes of Nanette Ranger (sculptor), Jacques Dhont (painter), Renske du Preez, and Laura Jamieson, all selected for their vibrant, nature-inspired works. Each piece tells a story of connection to the land, much like the wine crafted just beyond the gallery’s doors.

Just another way Dunstone weaves rest, reflection, and romance into every part of your stay.

Chocolate, Wine & A Dreamy Dinner for Two

After a lazy afternoon unwinding in our cottage, we headed down to Roots for a romantic dinner that turned out to be one of the highlights of our stay. The vibe? Warm, welcoming, and totally unpretentious! Just good food, great wine, and that kind of slow, golden-hour energy you wish you could bottle and take home with you.

Sip, Swoon, Repeat: Dunstone’s Signature Chocolate & Wine Pairing

One of Dunstone’s standout experiences and a total must if you’re visiting is their thoughtfully curated Chocolate & Wine Pairing. It’s not just any tasting; it’s about uncovering the chemistry between rich handcrafted Belgium chocolates and carefully crafted wines.

Here’s how it went down, one decadent bite and sip at a time:

Dunstone Grenache

This young, fruit-forward red is light on its feet but full of character. Expect vibrant red berries: think cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate, layered with fresh floral notes and just a whisper of spice on the finish. It’s unoaked, which keeps the wine elegant, silky, and refreshing.

Paired with: A milk chocolate praline filled with milk ganache, cranberry, and white pepper.

  • Why it works:

The cranberry mirrors the tart red fruit in the wine, amplifying its juiciness. The white pepper in the chocolate draws out the Grenache’s gentle spiciness, while the smooth milk ganache softens the acidity, rounding out the mouthfeel. It’s playful, light, and unexpectedly complex.

Bela Bela Cape Blend

A rich, expressive blend (typically Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinotage) offering layers of ripe black fruit, mocha, and a touch of vanilla and spice from subtle oak aging. The wine is medium- to full-bodied with velvety tannins and a lingering, slightly savoury finish.

Paired with: A milk praline filled with dark ganache, dark berries, and sea salt.

  • Why it works:

This pairing plays on the wine’s chocolatey core: cocoa and berry notes in the ganache reflect the wine’s depth. The sea salt lifts the flavours and cuts through the richness, while enhancing the wine’s supple texture and dark fruit character. It’s lush, layered, and undeniably indulgent.

The Roots Shiraz

shiraz and chocolate

A bold and unapologetic full-bodied Shiraz with blackberry, plum, and cassis at the core, lifted by black pepper, clove, and a touch of smoky oak. There’s a lovely tension between fruit and spice, and a muscular structure that still manages to feel plush and warming.

Paired with: A dark chocolate praline filled with dark ganache, burnt caramel, and white pepper.

  • Why it works:

The intensity of the dark chocolate matches the weight of the wine, while the burnt caramel echoes the Shiraz’s toasted oak and slightly smoky notes. The white pepper brings the spice to life, creating a pairing that feels bold and sensual…a slow, moody tango of flavour.

Dunstone’s Culinary Journey: Where South Africa Meets Belgium

At Roots, you step into a world where South African hospitality meets the refined elegance of Belgian cuisine. Every dish unfolds a story of passion, tradition, and culinary artistry. It’s also the ultimate romantic dinner destination in Wellington. Think candlelight flickering off wine glasses, the irresistible aroma of delicious food filling the air, and soft jazz playing in the background. It’s more than just a meal—it’s a culinary journey!

The Perfect Start: Bitterballen to Share

After soaking in the atmosphere, we turned our attention to the food. We kicked things off by sharing a plate of bitterballen—crispy, golden Dutch bites made for dipping and stealing off each other’s plates.

Main Course: Steak That Speaks to the Soul

For mains, we both craved a proper, no-fuss steak, and Roots delivered. Our steaks arrived perfectly cooked to a juicy medium, buttery-tender with full, rich flavor. Paired with golden, crispy Belgian-style chips and creamy mushroom sauce, it was the kind of meal that made us pause after the first bite—eyes closed, smiles shared, and not a single word needed.

Dessert: A Sweet Ending

For dessert, my husband chose the summer fruit tiramisu—light, refreshing, and just sweet enough, layered with airy mascarpone, delicate sponge, and seasonal berries. As for me, I ended the evening the Italian way… with an affogato. The rich espresso poured over velvety vanilla ice cream was simple, sensual, and utterly satisfying.

A Place to Savour Moments, Not Just Meals
