It is All About SALT at Paul Cluver!
If you are looking for a day out, with a touch of excitement, then visiting SALT @ Paul Cluveris your ultimate food and wine excuse. Firstly, the scenic drive from Worcester to Elgin is absolutely spectacular. It is as if you are in a different world. Majestic mountains sweeping over a magical valley, bursting with luscious and fertile vineyards, apple orchards and dark green forests.
The clear signs that we had a good rainy winter is clearly noticeable! Dams are looking fuller and the Cape is much greener, which we have not seen for a long time. If I wasn’t traveling alone, I would have stopped and taken some pictures! Woman alone… I don’t think so!
I had the honours of being invited to the re-launch of SALT. SALT opened early December 2017, at Paul Cluver! The brainchild of legendary chef duo Craig Cormack and Beau du Toit, with Mechell Spann at the helm will take your taste buds on a rollercoaster ride.
All I can say is that your taste buds are in for an explosion of flavours, including a salt that has a taste of majorly… seriously… super concentrated boiled egg. That was an absolute shocker to the taste buds, as you are not expecting to taste something that taste like a good old fart after eating a boiled egg for breakfast. Wine friends it is bad! Seriously bad! LOL!
They re-opened just in time for Summer and they are waiting to welcome you and your family, as you read this very article. Situated on the family owned Paul Cluver Wine Estate, this collaboration is a perfect match made in heaven for all food and wine enthusiasts.
Here they will offer you the ultimate experience in food and wine! Starting off with an informative wine tasting in their Tasting Room, here you can sample their range of award-winning wines.
Did you know they make a Riesling and Gewürztraminer? Neither did I! One word: Heaven! As I was in the Elgin Valley – how can you pass the opportunity of having Pinot Noir? All I can say is that you will not be disappointed. 🙂 Each of these wines has walked away with an award at the Six Nation Wine Challenge!! So congratulations to the winemaking team!
With the holiday season approaching super fast, this is the ideal opportunity to stock up!.
The brand new look is best described as au courant with a hint of a classiness. You have the wonderful option sitting inside looking out the huge windows. This creates the illusion of sitting outside in the orchards, but completely sheltered from the harsh elements. We all know the day can be sunny and warm, but always gets spoiled by that wind!
Should it be a blissful hot summers day, like today, you can enjoy sitting on the patio that is well shaded, over looking the landscaped garden and pond. You can choose to enjoy tasty morsels from the menu or alternatively you can book a gourmet picnic basket.
Should you be looking for a venue for that very special occasion, don’t worry SALT has your back! The dining area boasts having not one but TWO dining areas, a slightly smaller one to host your private special event.
Open for breakfast and lunch, the menu at SALT truly celebrates the elements of wholesome meals, with a twist. Add a pinch of salt and a dash of wine to make up the ingredients for a winning recipe. Each and every dish includes one of the many dozens of salts found around the globe.
Yes, I said every dish, contains salt and that includes desserts. On each elegantly set table, you will discover 4 of these salts beautiful displayed. Three intriguing salts (can’t remember their names, a black salt that comes from Hawaii, (my favourite) and the extremely nasty tasting one (taste with caution) and another one) all displayed on a Himalayan salt slab. You may wonder what on earth will pair with this Sulfuric tasting salt? The only way is to find out yourself! :p
Free range eggs with home-cured and smoked bacon are on the menu, but why not try a Banana Cream Pie for breakfast instead. Make the most of the lunch offering selecting from the starters, mains and dessert sections, promising to take your taste buds on an epicurean journey.
Just some of the offerings on the menu…
“Our ‘SALT’ philosophy is to have an authentic approach which means using only the best ingredients to cook honest, no fuss, but tasty food, ‘’ says Craig. “It’s about keeping it real.”
“Made with the best and simplest of ingredients we turn our dishes into absolute wonders, which you would come to expect from an award-winning farm. In the kitchen, we have no limits when it comes to creating the perfect dish. Cooked and prepared in the correct way where each food offering is able to speak for itself. The restaurant promises a relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy great food and superb wines.”
Chef Mechell
For lunch you can opt for either a two or three course meal starting at R295. The restaurant is open from Tuesday to Sunday (8:30am to 4:30pm), and pre-booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.
