Whisky has also proven to be the ideal winter companion, and what better way to celebrate than with two iconic dynamic duos? The Old-Fashioned Cocktail!

When prompted to think of a delicious whisky cocktail, one of the icons on the list is bound to be the classic and esteemed Old-Fashioned Cocktail. This timeless drink exemplifies the perfect harmony achieved by combining whisky, sugar, water, and the distinctive dash, or two, of ANGOSTURA® bitters.

The Origin of the Old-Fashioned Cocktail

The Old Fashioned cocktail dates back to the early 19th century and is often credited as one of the first cocktails ever created. It was originally referred to simply as a “whisky cocktail,” a term that encompassed a mix of spirits, bitters, water, and sugar.

The name “Old-Fashioned” emerged in the late 19th century as bartenders and patrons began to request the drink made in the “old-fashioned” way, distinguishing it from newer, more elaborate concoctions.

The History of ANGOSTURA® Bitters

ANGOSTURA® bitters were invented by Dr. Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, a German surgeon general in Simón Bolívar’s army in Venezuela. In 1824, Dr. Siegert developed the bitters as a medicinal tonic to alleviate stomach ailments among soldiers. The bitters were named after the town of Angostura (now Ciudad Bolívar), where Siegert was stationed.

By 1850, Dr. Siegert began exporting ANGOSTURA® bitters to England, the Caribbean, and the USA. The bitters quickly gained popularity and became a staple in cocktail recipes. In 1875, the Siegert family moved the production to Trinidad, where the bitters are still being made to this very day. The exact formula remains a closely guarded secret, known only to a select few within the company.

Celebrate Innovation

Beyond timeless classics, ANGOSTURA® bitters continue to inspire modern mixology. The versatility and depth of flavor fuel the creativity of bartenders, driving the evolution of whisky cocktails.
