NEWS: Celebrate International Pinot Noir From Elgin Ridge Wines

Not only do we celebrate International  Pinot Noir Day on the 18th, but we also raise a glass to wine sales resuming on the same day. Although your wine supplies might be looking a bit sad at the moment, it’s not long before you will be able to restock them with Elgin Ridge Wines’ 282 Pinot Noir (the name given to indicate the height above sea level) and CRUNCH! Pinot Noir.

Research has shown that there is a trend to move away from the traditional to organic, and this is where Elgin Ridge ticks the right boxes, as it is only one of a handful of certified biodynamic wine producers in South  Africa. Situated in the heart of the Elgin Wine Valley, which is renowned for its unique terroir, natural beauty and undeniable character, wines from this boutique estate are handcrafted and made to enjoy for all year round enjoyment.

Elgin Ridge 282 Pinot Noir 2015

Elgin Ridge 282

Regarded as the ‘queen’ of South African red wines, owners Brian and Marion Smith firmly believe that the 282 Pinot Noir 2015 vintage deserves all of the hype it has received. Although released slightly later than anticipated, this vintage made it through a cold and wet winter which was met by a cool yet moderately dry summer.

This resulted in a wine with a deep, rich garnet colour, offering aromas of dark cherries, roasted cocoa beans and nuances of pine needles on the nose. The palate is an amalgamation of green olive tapenade, dark cherries and dry salon tea flavours. As Pinot Noir is one of the most versatile red wines it is also the perfect food wine, and can be enjoyed throughout the seasons.

A match made in culinary heaven when partnered with a Beef Wellington, roast chicken or even hearty mushroom risotto. Comfort food and wine at its best! Available directly from the farm at R250 per bottle and select specialist wine outlets nationwide.

The CRUNCH! Pinot Noir 2019

Adds further endorsement to what Brian and Marion are all about. Grounded humans and enlightened grapes equal honest wines. Made with whole bunch natural ferments (50%), the wine was left to age in concrete eggs for seven months, resulting in an everyday drinking wine.

The process that the wine goes through is perfectly described as a combination of natural, old school and innovative techniques – a harmonious partnership between old and new. Another stand out feature of the CRUNCH! is that, although in cork, there is no foil or wax wrapping. This has been done deliberately to best illustrate Brian and Marion’s philosophy of their ‘feet on the ground’ approach.

A red wine with tastes of Summer, the CRUNCH! Pinot Noir 2019 is young and fresh – perfect for all year-round enjoyment. With aromatics of intense raspberries and cranberries that carries over to the palate with a salinity that leaves your mouth watering for more.

As we head into the colder months the wine is match made in foodie heaven when served with light pasta and rice dishes, as well as seafood and believe it or not even goats’ cheeses. Available directly from the farm at R125 per bottle.

To celebrate the end of this ‘drought’ we are offering a 20% discount on all orders placed by 31 August, for a minimum order of six bottles which can be of the same wine or a mix of the wines available. Simply enter the WYS2PFN6 when placing your order and the discount will be applied immediately.

  1. I am 99% sure that this is the organic farm we visited a few years ago. It was a lovely visit and we think about it often. Did you know they use ducks for pest control? Ducks, apparently, absolutely LOVE eating snails. Would recommend 10/10
